Light-matter states with magnetic molecules

Summary

This project aims to bridge the gap between atomic and solid state physics. We couple the electronic spin of molecular nanomagnets to a strong photon field. Here we use the magnetic moment of molecules as a quantum degree of freedom and couple it to the magnetic field of a planar microwave resonator operating in the GHz range. With appropriate choice of the resonator design and the ensemble of magnetic molecules, we will reach the strong coupling limit and enter the field of cavity quantum electro­dynamics (QED). We couple to the magnetic component of the light field; in contrast to the established approaches to cavity and circuit QED. We combine the universal properties of atoms and molecules with the convenient access of solid-state systems.
Magnetic molecules can form crystals or can be embedded in a solid-state matrix while main­taining their fundamentally molecular properties: the macroscopic magnetic response of such a solid sample can be described as a quantum mechanical ensemble of identical molecules. The coupling to the envir­on­ment is sufficiently weak to preserve quantum coherence up to a microsecond, as shown by our recent experiments. By exploiting large numbers of molecules, we reach the strong-coupling regime which would be inaccessible with a single molecule. The long-term objective of this pioneering project is the creation of hybrid quantum systems and the exploration of quantum control by utilizing nano­magnets. Our experiments address the interaction between the molecules in a solid, and they represent a new approach to observe collective response of molecular magnets.
